How to softmod your Xbox. Softmod is the modification of your software in the Xbox. Once softmodded, you can FTP, install Xbox Media Center (XBMC), emulators, roms, and many other useful apps to be used on the Xbox.

Introduction

What does softmod mean? Softmod means that you are modifying your software so you can make greater use of your Xbox.

What can you do with a softmodded Xbox? There are many things. You can install Xbox Media Center (XBMC) which is the most powerful media center for the Xbox. This will allow you to watch avi and divx movies, run apps, and further customize your Xbox and the way the dash looks (can make it look like the 360!!!). Other applications you can install are emulators, which allow you to play roms; basically you can play classic games from the classic consoles such as Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Pitfall, and many more. To mention a few other apps that are useful, there is DoggleFree which, if you don't have a dvd controller for your Xbox, will allow you to play DVD's with the Xbox controller.

What else can you do? Well, you can FTP to your Xbox which grants you access to any file on the Xbox harddrive. What's this mean to you? Since all files are on the Xbox, that means all files can be modified. If you know how to properly modify a file, you can add new demensions to the game, such as Halo 2 modding.

We have many great tutorials here on our website. If you haven't had time to look around, here are 2 popular methods:

http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox...r-1-1-1-a.html - This is my choice of softmod method. Krayzie's is good for both beginners to experienced modders. If you are an XBL modder, then you'll want to use this. Unlike the other installers, you can create XBL gamertags without having to uninstall the softmod. Another great feature that this installer has is the "On/Off" switch. You can turn the softmod off if you felt like being 100% safe with going on XBL then turn it back on when you want to FTP to your Xbox.

Many of Krayzie's features are packed in Softmod Installer Deluxe 4.0 (SID 4.0), unfortunately, you cannot make new gamertags and you cannot turn off your softmod. In order to make a gamertag, you will have to uninstall your softmod, make the gt, and then reinstall the softmod if you wanted to remod the maps or replace the modded ones with the originals.

We also have Softmod Installer Deluxe 4.5 for download, but we do not have the tutorial for it quite yet. Go to http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox...uxe-4-5-a.html to get the installer. I would recommend following the SID 4.0 tutorial but it will probably not be verbatim.

There are many other installers, but these are the most popular ones and the ones that we can provide the most help for.

**WARNING** After you are done softmodding, skip down a bit on this "guide" to the FTP part. FTP to your Xbox, download your MSBACKUP and your EEPROM backup. This is ESSENTIAL. If you don't do this and your Xbox screws up, you will either have to go through M$ to get it fixed (>$80 USD) or get it repaired through LGC (price negotiatable). If you have them backed up, then you can always use XboxHDM to recover your Xbox if something happens to go wrong; this will fix it everytime if you have the appropriate backups.

After Softmod

Now that you have your Xbox softmodded, you can do many things. I would suggest grabbing http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/inst...e-v3-10-a.html

What that disc will do for you is automatically install just about any app you could want (for now anyways). It has dashboards (included XBMC with MC360), emulators (read aobut the BAED 2 paragraphs down first), apps, skins, etc. I highly recommend using this if you are a beginner.

If you are into old school games like Super Mario Bros, Sonic, etc...basically anything before the N64, I recommend you get this:

If you haven't installed emulators using AID 3.10 yet, then good. You will only need to install Surreal 64, PCSX, and maybe 1 one since most of the emulators are on these discs. When you download and burn these discs, they contain thousands of classic games that will play right off that disc.

If you want to post pictures. I basically wrote this to get more traffic from google and I figured this could help some people get going before and after softmodding. Let them know what they are doing and for what reasons, and show them the potential the Xbox holds...since many don't really know.

If people would like me to elaborate on some aspects of modding the Xbox, or things that I left out (since this was written on the spur of the moment) please let me know and I'll try to my best to include them.

I want point this out for beginners...this is good if you are just starting out and have no clue where to start with softmodding.
