USB Adapter

NOT WRITTEN BY ME

These are the basic components that you'll need:
  • XBOX gamepad
  • USB extension cable
  • Set of screwdrivers and pliers
USB cable/connector can be taken from an old mouse if you happen to have one. Using old parts bring the costs down and it is always nice to find new uses for them.

Schematic
Idea here is to match the colors in both connector. Red to red, white to white etc. There is one extra wire in XBOX connector, yellow, and you should not touch it at all. Shieling wire mesh was soldered together between both connectors. Wire coloring may be different in some controllers but the pin plasing is the same. +5v and gnd are always the opposite pins and data wires are in between.

Opening the connector
To get the connector open, you need to use a wide and flat screwdriver head. I marked the edge you need to pry open on each side with green. Red arrows show the positions of little claws that are holding the pieces together. It might be easiest to disassemble the connector by applying some pressure to these points and release the claws.

Pieces
Connector on the top left is covered by metallic plate from both sides but I removed the top piece because it is not really needed.

Wires
  • Red (+5 volts)
  • White (Data)
  • Green (Data)
  • Yellow (controller type sense)
  • Black (gnd)

Soldered
Just remember to combine the same colors. Do not strip too much wire because it may short the connections more easily. On the bottom image you can see the shielding mesh that I have soldered together.

Casing
I carved a small opening on the casing part on the right. This allows the USB cable to go freely inside the connector.

Finished
Everything put back together. I applied some hot glue inside the connector to keep everything from moving around when the cable moved but this is not absolutely necessary. We are now ready for some testing to see if the cable or console will breath fire and smoke or work properly.
