your tut does work but the heat sink on the cpu does not need to be changed. And cleaning off the gpu and putting new thermal on it only gives it a 1-2 degree difference( but that doesnt matter, do it if u have the stuff but its not needed). I have fixed about six of these xbox's and 5 work perfectly cause i only changed the gpu heat sink ( the small one) and the other one that kinda works freezes. I actually dont know y but it is the only xbox i tried changing both heat sinks on.

Yes, most of the time you only need to do the GPU but why be lazy? just do both to be safe since there are some errors caused by the GPU. And you are wrong about the paste, the old stuff is usually hard and dry so when you take off the heatsink it breaks the contact with the chip, so its always a good idea to put new paste on. that could be why your 1 box is freezing.

You need the proper sized screws. Just go to a hardware store, tell them what you need (the dimensions of the screws and washers).

I have to say this is a great tutorial, easy to read and straight to the point. The tutorial I used a couple months ago was hella confusing and had 100 steps.

i followed this tut + used same parts from fastenal + arctic silver 5. im at the point of letting it overheat/cooldown then it should work but when i started it up nothing came up on my screen its still blank like my xbox was turned off and it still has rrod after i let it overheat and sit for about 10 min. does anyone have any idea what happened?

EDIT: ok now i have a new problem..
when i turn on the xbox the center light blinks green for about 3 min plus no display nor sound, then after the 3 min of blinkin it give s me the rrod, any suggestions?

also, i did spill abit of thermal paste on the motherboard but cleaned it all up after tryin the overheating step a couple times. could that have done something?

I'm doing this now, got to the point to cook it up and this particular Xbox has the center light flash green for about 30 seconds and then the RROD comes up, then a while it goes to the overheat ring 2 lights. I had the fan on, I'll try it now without the fan.

And when I get to the 2 red lights it won't turn off unless I unplug it.

Yeah thats kinda wierd. no red light come up until it overheats? that might mean you tightened the bolts too much. also, when it overheats it will let you turn it off after a couple minutes.

I bought this one broken off eBay. I have a regular Xenon motheboard. I found luck in putting the fan over the CPU heatsink because the thermomoter that shuts off the console from overheating is on the CPU, and you need to cook the GPU. Just set it so it blows air into the heatsink, run it for 5-10 minutes, then let it cool for 15 minutes. It should be fine after that.

So you put thefan on the left heatsink? and then the fans speed up and gets loud
right?

EDIT: I had to tighten the screws

EDIT2: you can fix the xbox with the new heatsink with this method

Re: How to Permanently fix the 3 red lights. by Scar

thanks for time in posting this tutorial mate, really helpful, basically i got the three red rings, but mine are different to many youtube videos i have seen, on them videos the red lights take a good 5-8 seconds to appear, however on mine it took 2 seconds at most, so i done this tutorial excatly how you did it, and i still had the three red lights, , but the time it takes for the red lights to appear has now changed to 5-8 seconds, any help would be great thanks
