How to Permanently Fix the 3 Red Lights (RRoD) by Scar

Hello... NEW MEMEBER here..... Okay I have read the multiple posts on this issue and have actually fixed 2 360's using this method. I bought one from ebay for my son with the same issue and opened it to fix the RROD. Once inside I noticed a corrosion like brown substance all over some chips on the motherboard. Havent been able to find any info on what I found so i wanted to pick the brains of the experts on this site. If you know what this is please let me know. Thanks

BY the way I have attempted the RROD fix 4 times with no luck. Is the mobo fried?

It would appear so... im not sure what that stuff is but it doesnt look good. probably somebodies ghetto fix which never work...

This doesnt fix every error code so you would find yourself with way too many dead boxes.

Thanks for the reply SCAR. I was leaning toward thinking it was fried, cause I have tried every fix in the book. I am getting the 0220 code though. It almost looks like somebody overheated the motherboard with a dryer or heat gun too long. Anyway I have purchased another motherboard for the 360. Hope all goes well. Thanks again

Thanks alot this tut worked pretty well for me.. I'm running my xbox right now just to see if it will over heat.
I never got the ring of death but I'm painting the case so I thought I might as well do this while it was open. Oh and I got bolts instead of screws and it worked just as well.

instead of a razor, you can take off the cotton from the q-tip and use that to scrap off the thermal paste.

thanks this worked perfectly on my xbox that had the rrod, took me a few tries but all went good. only thing is i couldn't find 10mm length screws but 12mm worked fine too. thanks!

best way to take off microsofts **** paste is to wipe it off with a napkin or something then once you wiped it as good as you can, take a bit of rubbing alcohol and put it on a Q tip and use that... it will make your GPU and CPU shine like new chips. just dont flood it, lol.

and when putting the new thermal paste on, use rubber gloves or something and spread it thin.

ok so i just tried this on my elite that has 2 red rings. the system will turn on once with green lights every once and a while but then shortly later it goes to 2 red rings again.

did i not put enough thermal paste on? or what is wrong? if i didn't put enough thermal paste on does that mean i have to scrape the stuff that i put on yesterday off?

somebody help! lol

your 360 is over heating, make sure your fans are working and your screws are tight.

ok so i cleaned the AS5 off until it had a mirror finish on the gpu and cpu, and i used steel wool/alcohol on the bottom of the heatsinks. also did the business card method of applying the AS5 very thinly only on the top of the gpu and cpu. it works perfect now, in fact it is quieter then before it broke. hopefully it stays like this!

Do you just put a dab of the Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound? Or do you put a dab and coat it evenly around the cpu and gpu?
