Talking How to play your Xbox 360 on your Laptop Screen

Ok, it took me like a week (of internet browsing) for me to figure this out, but I finally got it 95% down. The only part missing right now is the sound, I can't figure out how to get the sound input to work on my laptop. I don't know if I can edit posts or not, but when I figure it out, I will try to tell you guys.

Pictures courtesy of n-gage.com because I don't have a camera with me.

Let me start out by telling you what kind of laptop I have. I have a $1300 HP Pavilion 6500 with a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 graphics card. I believe this makes a difference in how much lag you have between your Xbox and laptop, but I'm not sure. But anyways, it's really easy to do this.

1) You have to purchase either PCMCIA or ExpressCard capture card. Luckily my laptop came with a TV tuner, which had an ExpressCard and a wire for A/V cable and S-Video cable input. You also need to purchase a S-Video cable for your 360. I got mine for $10 at Gamestop but I'm sure you can be able to get it cheaper.

2) Connect the appropriate female and male wires with the exception of the yellow one, which is the composite analogue video cable. We will use the S-Video instead.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

3) Download this program "Win DVR 3.0." You can check out the description here. I have the trial version right now, so if anybody can help out a fellow forum member...

4) After you install the program and open it, right click anywhere and scroll down to "Setup." From here, go to "Device" tab and change the Video Input device to your capture card, and change the Video Input source to S-Video. Your 360 dashboard should now appear in the back, but not full screen. To fix this, go to the "Display" tab and change the "Display Aspect Ration" to "16:9" or whatever fits your laptop. I have a 15'' screen so it fits fine.

5) To get sound. I don't know how to get sound to work on my laptop, but it's probably the same thing as getting the video. Under the same "Device" tab as the video one, there is an Audio Input device option. I'm sure you are supposed to change it to the option according to A/V cables but my computer has a MIC input and that's the option it gives. I don't know how to fix this yet.

So yeah, that's basically it. As for lag wise, you won't see much lag. For me, the Xbox 360 broadcasts perfectly onto my laptop, except every minute or so, there is a 1 second hitch, or delay in the exchange of information. During this time, your screen will freeze, but your Xbox will keep playing. So you just have to imagine where you are going for less than a second. But this problem may be due to overheating of the ExpressCard or something like that.

Well there you go, if you ever needed to know like I did, how to play your Xbox 360 on your Laptop Screen.

Thanks to forum member T-Sizzle for helping me out along the way. Oh and n-gage has some guy that did this, but he never gave a tutorial. So I didn't go and take someone else's tutorial.

The whole reason I wanted this was because, A, I already had a TV tuner. B, I didn't want to buy a monitor or TV (I'm in a college dorm and there are many reasons why I didn't want to do this). C, I didn't want spend a lot of money. I only spent 10 dollars on a S-Video cable for my Xbox.

I did check out the Adaptec Gamebridge and you can barely find those anywhere and they were pretty expensive. I also didn't want to ship something to my dorm.

$15-25 on eBay including shipping. Depending on who you buy from. Could probably even get it cheaper if you bid rather than buy it now...

Example: Adaptec ACV-1400 GameBridge 2.0 PS2 Xbox GameCube New - (eBay item 180143576329 end time Sep-25-07 19:53:45 PDT)

Good game ...

It's nice, but I dont think the lag is worth it... There has to be a better way to go about doing this.

Yes, you can. It won't be crystal clear like theirs, but you won't get extremely high quality like that unless you buy a very expensive internal capture card. For recreational purposes the quality should be more than enough.

Re: How to play your Xbox 360 on your Laptop Screen

Slightly off topic, although this is a lesson that exemplifies advancement in technology, consider my predicament I have a Hp TouchSmart Pc connected towards my Xbox 360 basically connecting it is simple however touch screen functionality kind of defeats the purpose of playing, however with a bit of tweaking I was able to Set up a neat little program which enabled me to basically shoot anything dead upon the place where the screen is touched, how awesome is that?

*I mainly use this upon COD4 (Sniper mode - using pinpoint presicion with a stylus I am able to hit any target; it sure helps accuracy) although I am trying to instill a few different commands also which will make this more practical for other choices of play against opponents.
