Might want to add that it makes it easier if you tape the cds with tape so they don't fall apart. Just some advice

Re: How to fix Error E74!

I bought the Halo edition 360 an after a year I got the E74 Well after a lot of searching I finaly decided to just call M$. After getting the run around, and disconnected twice, I got to talk to someone that said I could get it fixed for free...but I would be getting a refurb and NOT a Halo edition. Not to mention my Hitach 79FL was modded (its ok though, I know they dont check that an the seals were carefully removed an replaced). I refused an the best they would do was to give me a Elite sans anything but the box. So I followed a xclamp replacement tut I found on youtube. I used rubber washers insted of nylon but to my surprise it worked However after about a year I got the messed up graphics again, and then the E74. So this time I used all recommended replacement parts this time but still no luck. I was going to get a new one but on my way I thought for $20 I could get a heat gun and reflow the board. I had to try, might as well at that point. I worked over the (H)ANA chip, let it cool down, AND IT WORKED!!! I have read differing opinions about the (H)ANA chip but in most cases it seems to be the problem in most E74 errors.

So you took a heat gun to the hana, let it cool, and it works? No pennies?

Yes re-flowing the board fixes most 3 red light erros and E74 like a charm. It is the best way to do it. Then if you add the xclamp removal to that. Its even better.

You cannot resolder the chips off and on. You just need to reflow the solder that is already on there.

Yeah I have 1 xbox that I did the xclamp repair to, and another with E-74. Neither did I 're-flow' so, perhaps down the line I'll do that.

Re: How to fix Error E74!

I will say this, if your gonna try to reflow your board do all your research and have a guide handy. I have seen a new method with a hosehold cooking griddle, dunno if I would try that (besides I can use the heat gun for other stuff). I got a Husky heat gun for $19.95 from Home Depot that has a setting for 400c and 700c. I used the 400c setting, aluminium foil to cover all the caps and plastic parts, kept the heat gun about 4 inches above the board and ONLY worked over the CPU, GPU, and (H)ANA chips using a cirular motion never keeping the heat too long on anything, 2 mins on the top, 2 mins on the bottom, then 2 more on top again. Let cool for 30 mins. Worked for me and a lot of other people. If your out of warranty, modded, or voided your warranty, what do you have to lose?

Yeah, dont even try a soldering tool. The cold solder joints (even if you could do it) dont respond well to that. I may need a citation for this but my understanding is that was another flaw using the cold solder. It may be more inviromentaly friendly but it makes the joints weaker (as it melts at lower temps) than traditional solder and is more prone to "wiskering" and cracking, also it was much cheaper to do this. I hope M$ is happy with all the "money saving" ideas that went into the Xboxes. M$ knew about these problems all along... "Oh try a new A/V cord" my a$$. Still I woudn't trade in my box for a Pay$tation. Way too much and its even having overheating problems too. And dont get me started on how Sony bullied eveyone into going to Blu-ray.

Re: How to fix Error E74!

Got an update for E74 errors that may help some ppl that keep having the E74 pop up even when they follow all directions and feel like they want to give up.
I got the E74 again. As I said earlier I have done all the tricks, clamp replacement using the instructions and replacement parts from lawdawg0931 (basicly the x-clamp replacement seen everywhere), reflowing, adding 12v fan, pennies, praying, crying...
After taking it apart again I noticed everytime I reseated the GPU heatsink it would work and I played it for a few hours without putting it back together, but when I put it back in the metal case and screwed it down it would either go E74 right away or play awhile then the graphics would mess up. It was then I noticed that the board was actually being pushed slightly up by the x-clamp replacement screws. I drilled out the holes in the metal support case below where the screws sat so the screws actually sat flush with the bottom of the case. This may have been overkill but I also used a little square of sticky tape with 4 pieces of foam on the ram chips on the bottom of the board to support them. Its worked like a charm and I played Fallout for 6 hours with no problem. Still working after 2 days an I hope that it the last time I have to take it apart to fix this. With all the problems that could cause an E74 you might as well try eveything.

Re: How to fix Error E74!

I've added pennies and CDs should I replace the thermal paste before I towel trick it to have a better chance of it working? Or does it matter?

Pretty self explanatory. Wrap the xbox in towels, let it overheat.
