And what exactly do you consider "hacking"?
While I agree that phishing is the most likely reason for this, you cannot say that he wasn't "hacked". He could have had his packets intercepted, downloaded a FUD stealer or even been caught out by the old "call and grab" method (i.e. where one calls MS and requests info on an account, collects all the info, then pretends to be the owner and gets the account).
So unless you know what you're talking about, don't go around making false claims.

By the way its called social engineering and actually its really hard now to social engineer accounts because of the rules and poilicies that they have put upon the agents at the call center, of course I know because I work for a customer service company and answer phone calls for CS!

If your a member of ripaway hosting, then they can hack you through that, there is an exploit in the site which allows people to get your password, ive had it done to me, and the hacker read out my passwords, he even hacked my friend who also had ripaway.

And after about a week of posting that little paragraph i Seen a website that looked interesting I had a look and i Learnt abit about a certon hacking technique and it turns out theres a way of geting the 'Reset my email password' email sent to you... This doestnt work on Live, MSN or any of the BIG names.. But there is a way to do it on say this website... So what i said wasnt exactly true (Not saying i lied, I just didnt know lmao)...
