When I got my GS3 it had the latest 4.1.2 Android OS but now that's obviously not the latest anymore. When I got it I rooted it pretty much right away with the clockwork work mod I believe. Whenever I unlock my phone it tells me to update or defer, when I press update it restarts and fails. How do I update my phone without unrooting or at least not losing everything on my phone?

I believe you could just download your stock firmware of the web, but I also think that if you want to change complete android version it will wipe your data . I am not sure though so I will dig around and see if I can find out.

Good news! There is a way to update! You may lose your data though, but there are various apps to back it all up without any work, so you will have to find one of those. Okay first you need to have a pc, your phone, the Samsung USB drivers (http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117#none), odin(http://secure.10-pn-installer.com/o...ledescription=Odin Setup&adprovider=jailbreak), and your rom (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=31550).

STEPS:
1. install odin and your USB drivers
2. (Assuming your phone is backed up) switch your phone into download mode, (power off, and hold power, volume down, and home until phone boots) plug your phone into your pc and insure that it recognizes your phone
3. Open odin
4.Make sure odin recognizes your phone ( should say something like in a little box COM:#
5. (Assuming you downloaded your rom) click on ap, and select your rom
6. MAKE SURE that only F. Reset time, and Auto reboot is checked
7. Click start
8. All should go (may take some time) and it should say success or finished, and your done!

If you run into problems, just ask!
This was all taken from personal experience and this website (I would view site to make sure it is your phone)
