Okay guys I am running Ubuntu alongside Windows and I did the 30 gb installation hoping it would be a bit faster but no it still runs pretty freaking slow. any ideas?
Get a better computer. To be at least somewhat helpful, change DEs to something light like LXDE (Or Openbox with some sort of panel) and get rid of all compositing.
Well it makes it seem like I have really low RAM which isn't the case at all, like windows and whatnot open slowly.
Sounds like either high expectations or a slow hard drive. Load times have little to do with RAM (Most of the time. The exception being if all RAM is being used, it'll take some time to page infrequently used memory, but even that may be considered a hard drive bottleneck to some degree).
I would be willing to bet you have a 5400 RPM hard drive with 16 MB cache. That would be the problem. If you had like a Western Digital Caviar Black, or maybe a SSD then you would have an argument, but because of the paging system Linux uses, it's very hard drive intensive.
Did you do wubi? If you did then I can say from experience that it is slower (for some reason) then installation from the CD
I would wait, Taiwan just got hit with floods, and harddrive prices are out the roof. They jumped up 200% overnight a few months ago, now they are starting to come down, but still not good.
