Minecraft is one of the most commercially successful games released in the past decade. The game was available all the way back in 2009 as a public alpha and it wasn't until 2011 until the full game was released by developer Mojang. Minecraft is a sandbox game with a nearly limitless amount of things to do and places to explore, but it wasn't long until players felt that more could be added to enhance the game. Modders began developing extra content to add things like new enemies, areas, weapons & armor, blocks, and even dimensions. The game saw many popular mods such as IndustrialCraft and BuildCraft, which added a variety of machines and power generation to the game. This paved the way for some of the mods that came later which expanded on energy systems and complex machinery and with these later mods, people got the idea to create their own modpacks chock-full of gameplay-enhancing content that made Minecraft an entirely new game.

Private and custom modpacks dominated for a significant amount of time, until people took the opportunity of making a modpack client. We saw things like Tekkit and Hexxit, which added technology-based and magic/exploration-based additions, respectively. There was also Feed the Beast, which aimed to completely overhaul the game itself and make it stand out completely from the normal Minecraft experience. The modpacks included added a substantial amount of mods related to magic, exploration, technology, and general overhauls of the game's mechanics. Feed the Beast servers have been among the most populated and most active servers since the client and its modpacks gained popularity.

P33zxCe.png

There are many modpacks available in the Feed the Beast client, but it's important to note how different they are from each other. Some focus on adding technology and machines, while others focus on adding more magic-oriented mods as well as improvements to exploration. Each of these modpacks utilize a set of core mods, as well as some unique mods to differentiate them from the plethora of other modpacks that are available. In each of the spoiler tabs, there will be a full list of each of the mods included in every pack, along with links to the mod's wiki page for additional information.

Infinity: Evolved
Feed the Beast Infinity: Evolved is a collective of every type of mod, be they magic or technology. Infinity: Evolved is designed to give players a full experience with tech mods like Thermal Expansion, EnderIO, Applied Energistics, IndustrialCraft 2, Immersive Engineering and Extra Utilities. The modpack combines this with key magic-based mods such as Thaumcraft, Blood Magic, Witchery, and Botania. Combined together, these mods create a systematic set of items and stages in the game that players must progress through. There are clearly-defined points in the game where players notice that they've "advanced" in magic or technology, and all of the mods are integrated in a way that encourages progression and utilizing every mod in the pack together. Infinity: Evolved is arguably the most stable modpack, as well as the most popular modpack out of all of them.

Unstable
Feed the Beast Unstable is more of a testing pack, of sorts. It uses mods that exclusively run on Minecraft version 1.8, while expanding on vanilla Minecraft. The pack is essentially a newer version of Vanilla+, another modpack in Feed the Beast, and the purpose of it is to test certain mods that only run on the newest version of Minecraft. Some of the more reputable mods included in the modpack are Thaumcraft and Progressive Automation.

Horizons: Daybreaker

Feed the Beast Horizons is notorious for using lesser known mods. It normally incorporates mods that aren't normally included in other modpacks and is best for players who have extensively played other modpacks and want to see newer content. The modpack varies per update, but it currently features Blood Magic, Equivalent Exchange, Mekanism, and Thermal Foundation. If you've already put a lot of time into Feed the Beast, it may be worth checking out just to see all of the mods that other packs don't generally include.

Vanilla+

Vanilla+ is the smallest and lightest pack available in Feed the Beast and doesn't do all too much to expand upon vanilla Minecraft. Essentially, it adds some quality of life mods that improve the functionality of concepts and content that was available in the vanilla game. Some of the more impressive mods included are Railcraft, Project Red, and Storage Drawers. One key feature of Vanilla+ is that it can be run on 32-bit systems due to its minimal content addition and low PC requirements.

Trident
Trident is a modpack with a focus on PvP or PvPvP. The game generally has a "base race" type style of play, and players will team up against each other to compete against each other. Players can utilize traditional weapons against each other in an attempt to dominate others' bases and they have many options on how to do that. Players can sneak around in the dead of night and go in guns blazing, or they can take a stealthier approach by mining underneath bases and using explosives to bury their opponents. It's a difficult modpack to coordinate, but if done right, it can prove to be quite an interesting competition between friends and strangers alike.

Many of the modpacks use overlapping mods in their packs and for good reason. Some of these mods have become staple mods that are widely used in both sponsored modpacks as well as custom and third-party modpacks. Most mods generally go down either a technology-based tree or a magic-based tree, with varying stages of progression and many different layers of content that can only be accessed by playing through the whole mod.

Tinkers' Construct is the first mod I'll be describing, as it's one of the simplest ones as well as one of the most fundamental mods. Tinkers' Construct is a mod that adds a smeltery system to the game with fully functional casts, metals, materials, and tools. Tired of the traditional sword-pick-axe-shovel-*** conglomerate of tools in vanilla Minecraft? This mod will multiply the number of usable tools and weapons by a factor of 7 with tools such as the hammer, battleaxe, crossbow, chisel, excavator, and many more. There are also numerous materials that each tool can be made out of with varying strengths and weaknesses, as well as accessories that can be added to the tools and weapons for a certain effect like auto-smelting, auto-repair, and many other unique effects. The key aspect of the mod involves players building a smeltery at any size they choose that uses lava to smelt down ores. Inside the smeltery, metals can be combined to form alloys and they can be drained from the smeltery into casts to form parts of the tools and weapons.

Thermal Expansion is the go-to machinery-based mod and adds a significant amount of content to the game. It dramatically changes how Minecraft is played by adding Redstone Flux, a source of energy that can be acquired by using steam, lava, and several dozen other methods. Redstone Flux is then used to power a great deal of machines added by the mod and mods are normally made to encompass the use of Redstone Flux, so you won't run into compatibility issues with the power source and other mods. Thermal Expansion adds machines that create a new way to handle ores you gain from mining with the Pulverizer and Redstone Furnace which doubles the amount of ingots you can get. There are dozens of machines in this mod in addition to the Pulverizer and Redstone Furnace, which can help players in processing wood, creating snow or ice, and even crafting things automatically.

Thaumcraft is, without a doubt, the most expansive mod when it comes to magic. The mod lets you become what is known as a Thaumaturge who is able to harness the power of "Vis" found naturally in the world. This Vis can be stored in a player's wand and used to cast spells and craft magical items. All of the player's findings are recorded in the Thaumonomicon, which is also used to uncover research and create more advanced magical items and processes. In Thaumcraft, players have the option to create and control Golems which can defend the player, harvest crops, store items, and use alchemy all on their own. There's also a multi-tiered set of different wands and magical spells that can be found and learned, with a great deal of magical items added as well. These items can make players levitate, they can keep mobs inside an area or outside of it, and there are even multi-block structures used for smelting ores and infusing items with magic. The possibilities are endless, and mods like Thaumic Tinkerer and Thaumic Energistics add even more to the already massive Thaumcraft.

Botania is another magic-based mod, although this one focuses on nature and harnessing the power of it. Players will explore and find magic-infused plants to help them obtain mana which can be used to progress further in Botania. A Botanist will craft mana pools designed to store liquid mana with a setup of mana-producing plants that will help them advance through the mod. Eventually, the Botanist will contact off-world creatures, such as the Elves of Alfheim, which will grant the player additional knowledge and many different components and upgrades to add to their arsenal. The Botanist will eventually need the last item attainable in Botania: Gaia Spirit which can grant them permanent flight, immunity to damage, and the ability to manipulate the world around them.

Applied Energistics is one of the more complex mods, but it solves a very important problem in these mods where players will have access to a huge amount of items that vanilla Minecraft's chests weren't meant to accommodate. One of the key things that Applied Energistics adds for players is a storage system based on data. Players will be able to construct a computer and a computerized system that stores items virtually and instead of using item slots like a chest, it uses storage space in a disk. The content offered in Applied Energistics sounds as good as it is hard to acquire. Materials for the storage system as well as its upgrades are hard to come by, and players will be expected to work for such a useful addition to their base. Some add-ons enable players with the ability to store liquids virtually in the same manner as items.

Blood Magic, as the name suggests, revolves around magic. Particularly through the use of sacrificing one's own life force to gain Life Points. The player will use this in a Blood Altar, which will help them craft things to help them progress through the mod. Eventually, using Life Points, players will be able to utilize spells and contraptions to keep players and enemies away from their base, as well as structures that allow the player to make customized spells to varying degrees. The options available to players are as limitless as their own imagine and determination.

Installing Feed the Beast is easier than you might think, all it requires is a Minecraft account and a decent gaming computer. In order to get Feed the Beast, all that you'll need to do is head on over to Feed the Beast's official website and click on the button that says "Download Stable FTB Launcher".

5f0f3e04674d07b1cb682cbad9b57dc5.png

If you're running on a Mac or on Linux, you will see that there are options to download the FTB Launcher for both operating systems. Clicking "Download Stable FTB Launcher" will download the client for Windows by default.

Once you do that, just run "FTB_Launcher.exe" to perform the setup. You will need the latest Java Runtime Environment and if you don't have it, the launcher will automatically open up the page containing the latest JRE. Once that's done, go back into the FTB Launcher and it'll start up the client.

When this is done, you should have the client open with all of the modpacks and options available to you. Before you can jump into any of them, however, you'll need to enter your Minecraft login.

aef6806f0ee9dffa71aed6fbf867df10.png

In the bottom right, you'll see a drop-down menu that should say "Select Profile" if this is the first time you've used Feed the Beast. Click the down arrow, and then select "Create Profile".

920653197e4c8eb3b69c9f41808d3583.png

A window will pop up with fields for your Minecraft.net login information. Don't worry, your login will be safe. Just enter the username or e-mail address that you used to sign up for Minecraft with, the password, and whatever profile name you choose for that account. When all of the fields are filled out, click on the button that says "Add" and your account will be added to the Feed the Beast launcher and you will then be able to download any modpack of your choosing, as well as play online on any server that you'd like to play on.

Troubleshooting
Installation doesn't always go the way you might plan, or there may be some options you'd like to tweak. Fortunately, there are many ways to fix any problems you might experience and the Feed the Beast launcher also offers customization options to tweak your game settings.

d74647ae383e2d3a67038c7ecf00d84f.png

The "Options" tab can be accessed by clicking the tab at the top of the Launcher. In your options, you have settings that can be tweaked to your preference, such as the option of showing the console and the amount of RAM you want to allocate to the game. As you can see in the image above, I have downloaded a 32-bit version of Java, so I am only able to allocate 1.5 GB of RAM to Feed the Beast. If you're on a 64-bit operating system and can run a 64-bit version of Java, then you can choose to download Java 64-bit by clicking the button underneath the red text.

1a53d4790cd2b48d43f94edf5834a12e.png

After installing Java 64-bit, close and reopen your FTB Launcher and head back into the options. If done correctly, you should no longer see the red text limiting your RAM allocation and you will be able to allocate as much RAM as you want. It is recommended to allocate at least 4 GB to the game, otherwise you may experience some crashes.

That about wraps this up, I'll edit information in as necessary. Hopefully it gets you guys into the Feed the Beast spirit! This guide would not have been possible without Houstonruss Houstonruss , Cosmic Owl, and Visual Studio.

Jk, nice thread Fey. It sure would be convenient if there was a server we all could play FTB on.
