| US Trade Commission opens investigation on Blu-Ray patents ![]() US Trade Commission opens investigation on Blu-Ray patents Blu-Ray patents under investigation part of lawsuit filed by former Columbia University professor against 30 other companies Sony may had won the format war against HD DVD, but now they are facing a much more serious challenge. Gertrude Neumark Rothschild, a former Columbia University professor, says she holds patents for light emitting laser diodes found in Blu-Ray players and other electronics. The lawsuit targets over 30 companies, including big names like Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, LG, Nokia, Motorola, Sharp, Hitachi, and Matsushtia (parent of Panasonic). The lawsuit was filed earlier this week with the US International Trade Commission. The ITC has specifically opened an investigation over the alleged use of the infringed patents in Blu-Ray players. | The whole point of filing the case with the ITC and not the Patent Court is to get a ban on imports of products containing the infringed patents. If you pay attention to cell phones a similar thing happened when Broadcom sued Qualcomm. Phones containing the Qualcomm chips that were infringed were banned from being imported to the US. So, if she wins, it's possible that a ban on all Blu-Ray players (including PS3) could get banned from being imported. That would be a huge hit of epic proportions on Sony and the BD camp. | ||||||

They will push so much dough at her she will have no choice. Either 1 she will take the offer for sony to purchase the patent, or like you said, take royalty checks. Either way sony will win. | ||||||
