When Halo 2 launched, it was a game that took the gaming world by storm. Building off the great foundation of Halo 1, with newer missions and Xbox LIVE capability, it was one of the most anticipated games ever to be released. It was the most played game on Xbox Live out of any Xbox game, and was not dethroned until the Xbox 360's hit shooter Gears of War took it's spot. With all the hype for Halo 2, the hype for Halo 3 was even bigger, if possible. The final game in the Halo trilogy, Bungie had it's hands full to deliver and live up to what was expected. The Xbox 360's "killer app" was released on September, 25 and in the following days set record numbers for sales.

Many believed it did live up to it's hype, as millions flocked to Xbox LIVE to play the game. However, on November 6, 2007, a little over a month of the Halo 3 launch, another game, not as anticipated as Halo 3 launched. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a first-person shooter that placed players in lifelike modern day conflicts, fighting terrorists in the Middle East and dealing with nuclear standoffs.

The Xbox 360 hosted a multiplayer beta for the game a couple months earlier. The beta was so hot, many people cheated their way into it. The game sold well during the holiday season, and recieved outstanding reviews, including a 10/10 from Official Xbox Magazine. However, on the week of January 14, 2008, many were shocked. Halo 3 wasn't the most played game on Xbox LIVE. How could it be? Not even 5 months after launch, Halo 3 had been dethroned. Halo 2 lasted years on the top, and Halo 3 can't last 5 months? Many gamers found Halo 3 to be great at the start, but said that it lost it's luster after a while. Even I, one who waited day by day, counting down, getting the Legendary Edition, found Halo 3 to become a bit repetitive. Christmas Eve was the last time I played Halo 3. Call of Duty 4 has entrapped me since Christmas Day, and it hasn't let me go. It's been the same for many gamers who found Call of Duty 4 a much more interesting storyline and more enjoyable Xbox LIVE experience.

The missions keep you on your toes and throw in twists and turns almost every step of the way. The multiplayer features many enjoyable gametypes, along with a unique ranking system and a fully customizable arsenal of real-world weapons with accessories like Grenade Launchers, Silencers, Red-Dot reflex sights, and the Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight (ACOG) scope. Perks like RPGs, extra grenades, C4 charges and Claymore land mines add in an explosive taste, while you can also use other perks to suit yourself for total war. An infinite combination of weapons and perks makes for a never repetitve game.

I know, you're probably thinking I'm trying to get you to drink the Kool-Aid and ditch Halo 3 (if you already haven't ). Truly, I'm not. You've probably heard enough of my wrap-up so back to the story.

When Call of Duty 4 took the top spot on the week of January 14, 2008 many people, including myself couldn't believe Halo 3 fell. After all, Halo 3 was an Xbox exclusive. Call of Duty 4 is on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. And ever since that week, Halo 3 has come back to the top once. Every other week, the beauty that the boys at Activision and Infinity Ward gave us has been sitting proudly on the throne.

Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 have been sharing number 1 for most played game on live ever since the COD4 launch.

I think COD 4 gets really boring after you hit Prestige mode.

halo definetly lost its touch. i feel like a retard when trying to play halo after playing call of duty and it seems that the graphics suck compared to COD4

When Bungie was designing halo they said they were going for better gameplay than graphics.

Yes!!! I told myself that as soon as i popped in the disc into my system. To much hype =]

anyway.. I play COD4 for a mouth or two. Game was fun, but it doesn't hold that much tactical advantages as RBV would have, RBV requires skill, and strategy.. COD4 is basically a run and gun shooter :laughing:... no offense to COD4 fanboys

This happens with every game. There were no other really good games on Xbox when Halo 2 came out, so why bother playing anything else? Don't say that COD4 is now the master. Trust me, I want COD4 like everyone else, but I'm also not gonna just screw my $120 copy of Halo 3 simply because a game has better graphics and a death grenade drop. Same tihng happened with GoW, same thing will happen with GTA4, people will wonder, "What the hell happened to COD4?" All games are fads that get old but stay good, as long as the studio produces them well enough.

Definitely not, im in 7th prestige mode already and its still as fun as day 1.

It is a run and gun shooter if your playing Deathmatch or any other respawn gametype. I play nothing but Search and Destroy (where you only get one life) so you cant run and gun if you want to survive.

I'm in the 9th prestige and it does get a little boring, but not quite as boring as Halo after just a couple games. Every since CoD4 came out I have played Halo 3 for maybe 20 games, and those are spread out over the time since CoD4's release. Those games were also just to take a break from one game.

I'm not gonna lie, I'd rather play H2 than COD4 or H3. That's pretty cool that something dethroned H3 tho. I didn't like the game that much anyway, but I'm in the vast minority.

ok honestly, i have never played cod4 online yet. beat everything on it except mile high club on vetran. i used to love playin halo 2, but it got old like most games do. halo 3 sucks no offence, but i only like the story line instead of multiplayer. i might have to try cod4 online i guess.

I visit this site often just to read up inn things and when i read about cod4 being number 1 it didnt bother me but i had to just sighn up for that reson to say cod4 sucks it takes no skill to kill summ one through the wall the game play sucks the campaign sucks to all around garbege game play alot of people that went to cod4 r the randoms that suck at h3 it takes skill to get a 4 shot ont on h3 or a head shot with the snipe team work and all that. so my point is that keep your bks from h3 on cod4 we dont need them peace out

You are stupid. The game play in COD4 is awesome, and Scar, I have played it, it's great, but I like to play what I pay for, and that includes all of my games. Besides, H3 will get better if/when we are able to mod it.

halo is the generic xbox game now. but people have relized and looked at other games. i doubt any game will hold #1 for long anymore.

I totally agree with you, theres SO many great games that are still to come. I just couldn't imagine any game ever being dominant like h2 was.
