Customers sent home without activated phone, told to activate it later on iTunes

It can't be an iPhone launch without activation problems, can it?
In the wake of last year's activation snarl, problems have yet again struck the iTunes activation servers, this time forcing customers to go home with an unactivated iPhone 3G. Both Apple and AT&T stores can't activate phones right now, and Apple says they're working to fix it. If you haven't gotten your iPhone 3G yet it might be time to think twice about going today. And if you're upgrading from a first-gen iPhone, you'll be stuck with two useless phones, as upgrading disables the SIM.

UPDATE: Around 4PM EST the activation servers went back online. All is normal.
