you might want to try cleaning it with a cotton swab and a bit of rubbing alcohol and then try reading the UMD again. If it was knocked out of calibration then it will be a pain to recalibrate it and it would be easier to buy a new UMD laser. Theyre about 25-30 bux.

Please help a total noob! I have just bought an imported PSP from china, it came with 1.5 on board but I wanted to upgrade the firmware on looking around I keep seeing that its TA-082 board can't be upgraded with custom firmware. Is this true?
What are the chances of bricking it? Can it be unbricked?
I can't seem to find a place that isn't full of techno babble and people who expect you to know what you are talking about already.
Will this winstaller work for me.
Also the X and O buttons are turned round on the PSP is there any way to change this?

You can put custom fw on a ta-082 mobo. The problem with ta-082 mobos was downgrading them to 1.5 fw but that has been resolved now. Since you are already on 1.5fw it makes no difference to you so yes the winstaller will work with the psp you have. When you are writing to the flash memory of your PSP (downgrading or installing custom firmware) there is always a chance of bricking however when all instructions have been followed to the letter it is quite rare for a brick to occur. Make sure your battery is at least 75% charged and you connected to the battery charger before you start. Once you have custom firmware installed you will have access to a recovery menu. To access the recovery menu-When the psp is turned on hold the on/off switch in the up position for at least 5 seconds then while holding down the right shoulder button turn the PSP back on. There are many things you can do in the recovery menu and one of them is changing the X and O buttons round. Have fun

Thanks isbreen it worked a treat, I was very nervous about the entire operation as I has only just received the PSP after my last one was stolen, can't afford that sort of thing very often.

I am a total noob to this. All I know is I have a version 2.81 software on my PSP and I am looking to downgrade to a 1.5. I tried the winstaller and when I rebooted the PSP and held R nothing happened, and the file located in 'game' turned out as a Corrupted File and would not let me open it. I know you cannot play downloaded games on my 2.81 so that is why I am downgrading. I have no clue about all the other technical stuff, I need help searching around on different forums hasn't helped me much. What am I doing wrong?
