What FW do you have?

Only the newer ones support 4GB memory sticks.

hmm maybe thats it! lol its like 2.71 i think

but if i wanna play old games or whatever how do i do that without updating the firmware and getting my card recognized

Old games?

You can play older PSP games on the newest firmwares. Only reason for staying at a low firmware is for homebrew and exploits etc.

I don't think it's a firmware problem thinking about it. PSP can support up to 4GB from launch, and 2.81 allowed higher than 4GB.
