Linux is open source and totally free, As far as I'm aware it is illegal to charge for the program (just the service of putting it on a disk)
It's possible to download yellow dog linux from torrent etc, and no... it's not illegal in any way..
here's a quick n00b guide for anyone that isnt sure..............
First thngs first,,
Make sure you have a USB keyboard & USB mouse, and I'd recommend a 512mb or above USB flash drive (purely for backing up Data)
1. goto Settings, system settings on your XMB and select "Other OS"
Then it will ask you to format, (Formatting is the only bad part as you will need to re-install your downloads etc)
Before formatting remember to back-up your saved games etc (download,s games, vids can all be downloaded on upto 5 differant machines, so you can easily grab these again over time...
If you have alot of music etc, then you may want to back this up, but due to the space requirements, I'd suggest concentrating on your game-saves..
2. When formatting, select custom (space requirements) and alot 10gb to "other OS" (not great for the 40gb SKU, But check Ebay, I picked up a 160gb Sata (2.5") ((Laptop))) hard-drive for £45. and installing a new HDD is simple, remove old, replace new, click format and the jobs done.
3. Now... make sure your USB Mouse & Keyboard are plugged in.
After formatting it will automatically check your bootable media (usb, dvd/cd etc) for a boot installer,
With YDL its a 3.3gb image you burn to DVD, the PS3 detects this DVD and installs (simple eh)
4. The Graphical installer is no differant from installing a game/app under windows, a few "Next" clicks, and a few settings such as location, Time and username and password.
5. Once complete, and after a long 30-40 second reboot, your Ps3 will reboot...
bringing you to Linux...
Linux is a full operating system, just like on a MAc, or Windows on a PC...
you can browse the internet, do Word-type documents, play games (although remember PC games wont work on linux, so you'll need top track down linux games)
And with Linux as you get mor eused to it, you can evolve it due to its versatility, change the whole desktop layout, add widget like bars & buttons, and run multiple desktops at once..
the BEst thing about Yellow dog linux is it's designed for the PS3...
I didnt check the wireless connection (mine is ethernet) But as soon as linux booted up it had detected my Mouse/keyboard, net and was 1 click away from surfing the net,
Finally Linux will not effect your Ps3 in any way other than reducing your hard-drive space by 10gb....
i'd recommend the Logitech wireless media keyboard, this comes with a dongle, and is again designed for th ePs3, works floorlessly under XMB or Linux and has a built in laptop style mouse pad
to change between Linux & PS3's XMb...
well if your under linux theres an option on the "Kickstart menu" (Like the start menu) which will boot you straight to the XMb..
And on the Xmb, to oot to linux, select Settings/system settings/default/other-os (then select reset and your ps3 boots to linux))

). Just because its linux doesn't mean it is free. Ethically open-source was designed to be "no charge software", but quite a few companies don't follow such morals. Another such example is Sun's Solaris OS.
