PS3 to go on a diet?

A new smaller, slimmer PS3 could be set to appear later this year.
Acting on a tip off from a well-informed insider at last month’s CES show, popular gadget site T3.com is reporting that a slimmer, lighter model could be introduced this Autumn.
T3’s artists have knocked up an impression of what the console could look like, featuring a convex top akin to that of the current PS3, but with a rectangular block underneath for the Blu-Ray drive and other components. And the refinements may not just be cosmetic, either: according to the article, the new machine could come with a 160GB hard drive as well.
No other details were given.
Whether it’s true or not is open to debate. Sony does have a long history of releasing smaller versions of its consoles, with the original PlayStation, the PS2 and the PSP having all undergone such changes. That said, both the PSone and slimline PS2 models were only introduced several years after the original console went on sale, so whether Sony feels this is the right time to do this to the PS3 is another matter.
Still, if the revised product looks anywhere near as sexy as T3’s mock up, it’ll certainly look the part.

The fake images look really nice..like a wii witha slab stuck on teh side lol.

I think if this was it ever happen (doubt it would be this soon) it would further increase its market share dramatically. No doubt some of the features might go (memory card reader/ backwards compatibility?)

While it would be nice I suppose, I view this the same way I looked at the HD upgrade/price drop. A big **** you to those of us that went out on day one, stood in line, and supported Sony.

I like the way they look, my parents thought about buying one because of the Blue Ray player in it, and being that they are expensive anyways (as they say).

Re: PS3 to go on a diet?

It's not going to be as thin as the impressions. The space is too small for a optical drive, 2.5" HDD, and the motherboard and heatsinks.

Sony should focus on dropping prices if they want to sell more consoles. Redesigning it 2 years after it launches is way too early. Look at the PS2.

Re: PS3 to go on a diet?

It looks like someone just took a stock PS3 picture and trimmed down the thickness of the curved top and the hardware bay.

I doubt Sony will make a thinner PS3 at the time now. They aren't selling like hotcakes, so Sony would have a time getting the current ones off store shelves. Plus they just launched the 80GB version that was announced at E3.

Re: PS3 to go on a diet?

I dislike that design, it looks like a wii with a riot shield hot glued to the left side of it. I agree with t sizzles there is no way they would release a redesign when they might have issues moving the left over old ones. Plus the fact that if it was that thin it could develop cooling issues.

The ps3 used to be the cheapest blu ray players but now I believe there are cheaper ones. All I know is that the ps3 is the best blu ray player because of firmware updates, games, internet browser, music, movies, pictures, etc.

Re: PS3 to go on a diet?

There are cheaper ones out there now, but the PS3 is the best because it has the features of a more expensive standalone with a lower price. You can thank Sony for taking a loss on each PS3 sold for the lower prices.
