Recently bought a new motherboard, I load everything up and notice that windows was asking for my product key. I enter it and it was blocked! I contact support and there was nothing they could do. I am now asking if I upgrade to 8.1 using the upgrade manager Microsoft provides if that will delete all other data on my hard drive. Or if I bought another windows 7 key and typed it in when prompted would that work.

If you go to Windows 8.x it should almost always keep a backup even if you don't want to.
