Quote: A jailbreak is the act or tool used to perform the act of breaking out of a chroot or jail in UNIX-like operating systems or bypassing digital rights management (DRM). In the former case it allows the user to see files outside of the filesystem that the administrator intends to make available to the application or user in question. In the context of DRM, this allows the user to run arbitrarily defined code on DRM-encumbered devices as well as break out of chroot-like restrictions. DRM-encumbered devices such as the iPhone have repeatedly been subject to jailbreaks, allowing the execution of arbitrary code, but have had those jailbreaks disabled by vendor updates And whats this "Installer.app"? - Quote: This is the application for modifying an iPhone or iPod Touch. Installer.app is a utility to jailbreak an iPhone. The version for v1.0.-1.0.2 and v1.1.2 was also called AppTapp and the online installer for direct iPhone or iPod Touch jailbreaking was also called AppSnapp. With every firmware update, hacks have been disabled. Installer.app can be downloaded for iBrickr also and the 1.1.2 Windows jailbreaking package "HomeFree" also installs Installer, as does the Mac OS X application iNDependence. Installer is developed by Nullriver. All in all, you can do things such as:
I will be honest, there arent too many, but a few problems. Make sure your OK with them before trying to hack/jailbreak.
There have been reports on successful jailbreaking (on both iPod touch & iPhone), but there have been reports that people who purchased the firmware add-ons have lost them and havent found a way to retrieve them. If you think about it, the iPhone apps are available for download on 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 jailbreaks, the only thing you will not get is the wobble function, but in the "Customize" app you can rearrange icons. Also, check this thread for http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod...-3-issues.html Where can I find all the .ispw firmware downloads? iPhone
Yes, but you will need to restore (see links above). Once you do so you can try again. What version do I need to start jailbreaking if I havent so already? Well, far as I know, you need to restore back to 1.1.1, jailbreak, and the use the jailbreak 1.1.2 program to upgrade to a jailbroken 1.1.2. http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod...kthroughs.html Well, if I'm already jailbroken at 1.1.1 and I want to jailbreak to 1.1.2, will I lose everything? If everything goes smooth, you shouldnt. http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod...e-1-1-2-a.html Will this effect my iPod/iPhone performance wise? For me it hasnt, but then again be smart and dont install TOO many programs. What about sources? Where can I find some more? http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod...d-sources.html Can hacking/jailbreaking "brick" my iPod/iPhone? No. If you get an error or have any problems with a jailbroken firmware, then use the restore tutorials to clear your iPod Touch/iPhone and start a-new. Do I need to restore if I plan to take my iPod Touch/iPhone to the Apple store or ship it? Yes. Apple wont try anything if you jailbreak (they dont approve of "unlocking" iPhones though), but if you try to take a jailbroken iPod touch to Apple they have the right not to service you or your product (and they probably wont). So you're saying restoring your Touch removes any signs Jailbreak was on your Touch? Mine is still under warranty....I want to 'Jailbreak' mine, but I'd hate to need to use my warranty and not be able to.....will restoring it allow me to send it in for repairs/etc?

I'm just nervous to Jailbreak mine....my girlfriend has gone through like 3 or 4 ipods over the years........none are the Touch.....but geez it's like an Xbox360 the number of times she's had to replace hers....

I was stating how my girlfriend has had very poor luck with iPods.....I'd hate to spend $300 on something that's going to be worthless in 6 months when I can't get a new one because I have 'Jailbroken' my iPod. If restoring your iPod's firmware completely removes any signs of 'Jailbreak' and it's aftermath, then great, it sounds like something I might try. But if it's something that can be traced, even if I did restore, I probably shouldn't take the risk until my warranty is up. That's what I'm saying Last edited by JoeMal; 01-25-2008 at 01:46 PM.

Well my friend found a way to get his to "break" so it will not turn on at all. i want to do this so that i can get the new one if it must be replaced. if mine has been restored, is there any trace of the ziphone mod on it?

| Re: Hacking & Jailbreaking iPod Touch/iPhone FAQ's After you restore it its like wiping your hardrive, you will have no trace of anything that was previously on it. So if you restore it just uses a backup on your computer and pretty much "reformats" your iPhone. | ||||||
