| I ****ing dare you ![]() | How to restore your iphone/itouch to any firmware How to restore your iPhone/iTouch to any firmware - By Haxalot88 Here we have a problem that many people run across. When restoring your itouch/iphone you may run into any of the following errors: -Error (1) -Error (5) -Error (6) -Error (20) -Error (1600/1601/1602/1604) Any of these errors (and a few others can occur as well) may occur while restoring your itouch/iphone. If you follow this tutorial, you can restore your itouch to any firmware version that you would like. Ok, so first thing is first, You need the following things: - An itouch/iphone (last i checked 3G does NOT work) - The firmware of your choosing. You can get these here. - Itunes 7.5. Direct download for Windows, and Mac OS X - Patience. Once you have these things, we may begin. Step 1 - Getting the right version of itunes. Now most problems with restoring the itouch are because of two main things: - Not using the right version of iTunes. - Not correctly in DFU mode. Your first priority is to get the right copy of itunes installed. If your version of itunes is 7.43 or below, or 7.7, you must uninstall it. Now you need to reboot your system because trying to install itunes 7.5 at this time will error when installing the GEAR framework. Once you have re-booted your computer, it is time to install itunes 7.5 from the links provided above. Step 2 - Preparing the ipsw I have had some trouble with this before, so this is more of a hint. Whenever I downloaded a firmware (used Firefox v 2.0.0.16) it came as a zip archive. THIS IS CORRECT. All you need to do is simply change the extension from .zip to .ipsw since all the package is, is a zip archive. Step 3 - Getting your iPhone/iTouch into DFU mode This is the second big step when restoring. Even if you have the right version of itunes, you will most likely run into more errors. First thing is first, getting your itouch/iphone into Recovery mode. This is like the area between a fully functional itouch/iphone before heading into DFU mode. In recovery mode, you still have the option of getting back to your normal itouch/iphone without restoring which you can find here. It is basically a mode that allows program such as iTunes or Ziphone to access the itouch itself for firmware modification or what-not. Here are the steps: - Turn on your itouch/iphone. - Press and hold both the home button and power button until you see the recovery mode logo. - Let go of both buttons. - Connect your itouch/iphone to your computer. You will know it is in recovery mode when you see either the following two pictures: ![]() ![]() After connecting to the computer, itunes will also popup with the following message: ![]() Step 5 - Going from recovery mode to DFU mode. Even in recovery mode, you still may run into errors. At this point I would head down to step 6 and attempt to restore your firmware before going into DFU mode. - Connect your itouch/iphone to itouch, and close the dialog box that appears. - Turn your itouch/iphone on if it isn't already on. - Press and hold both the home button and power button until the itouch/iphone turns off. - The second it turns off, let go of the power button, but still hold the home button for around 20 seconds longer, or until itunes pops up with another message. You will know you have successfully entered DFU mode if itunes recognizes your itouch/iphone while the screen is still white. You may now proceed to restore your itouch/iphone without any problems. Step 6 - Restoring your itouch/iphone The last and final step in this tutorial. This will go through the actual process of restoring your firmware. - In itunes, head to the control tab for your itouch/iphone. - While holding down the "Shift" (windows) or "Option" (Mac) key, click on the Restore button. This will bring up a dialog box asking for you to select your firmware. - Navigate to your firmware, and open it. - iTunes will now begin to restore your itouch/iphone with the firmware that you have provided. It should take around 5-6 min. - If you are restoring to the 2.0 firmware, you must take the following steps: - After installing the firmware, the itouch/iphone will try to connect to itunes. However, since the 2.0 firmware uses the app-store, it requires a version of itunes that has it to complete the restore process. - Download iTunes 7.7 here. - Uninstall itunes 7.5, and reboot your computer. - Install iTunes 7.7. - Disconnect, and reconnect your itouch/iphone to complete the restore process for the 2.0 firmware. Congratulations, you have successfully restored your itouch/iphone's firmware
