Ultimate iPod Modding Pack

How To Hack iPods

Installing Linux onto your iPod is a non-dangerous process. When you think your iPod is broken, it is not. You cannot render your iPod useless with software.

Table of Contents:

Full sized iPods
1.1 iPod 1st Generation\2nd Generation
1.2 iPod 3rd Generation
1.3 iPod 4th Generation
1.4 iPod Videos (5th generation)
1.5 iPod Photo/Color

Small iPods
2.1 iPod Mini
2.2 iPod Mini 2nd Generation
2.3 iPod Nano 1st Generation

Touchable
3.1 iTouch

First of all to install everything for the full sized and small ipods we will be useing Installer 2 by ipodlinux.org

Steps to download:

Windows:
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/84862946/ipodlinux-installer-2.3w.zip
Mac:
Code:
http://ipodlinux.org/Manual_Installation
Macs must be manual installed sorry mac users.

Linux x86 (32bit):
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/84863288/ipodlinux-installer-2.3lx.tar.gz
Linux amd64 (64bit):
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/84863288/ipodlinux-installer-2.3lx.tar.gz
Users useing Debian/Ubuntu must install the libpng3 and libssl0.9.8 libraries into the same folder (basically put those files into the folder)

Full sized iPods

1.1 iPod 1st Generation\2nd Generation
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 1: Run the installer

Step 2: Follow the steps the installer says

Step 3: Once the installer is finished reboot the iPod and hold rewind to boot into Linux.

Congrats you did it woot ftw.

1.2 iPod 3rd Generation
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 1: Run the installer

1.4 iPod Video (5+5.5 Generation)
5th gen and 5.5 gen look the same
Click the image to open in full size.

First you must find out what version you have.

60GB iPod: This is a 5G (Fifth Generation) iPod only.
80GB iPod:
This is a 5.5G (Fifth Generation Enhanced) iPod only.
30GB iPod:
This can be either a 5G or 5.5G iPod.

How to distinguish your iPod video.

Step 1: looking at the thing above 60 gigs are 5 and 80 gigs are 5.5 so thats easy. but if you have a 30 gig like myself you must go into more detail

Step 2: Look at the last 3 digits of the serial number and if it is
Code:
V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, WUC, and X3N.
than you have a 5.5 if it isn't one of those chances are you have a normal 5th gen

Now that you know what type of iPod video you have you can install Linux.

Step 1: Run the installer

Step 2: Follow the steps the installer says

Step 3: Once the installer is finished reboot the iPod and hold rewind to boot into Linux.

1.5 iPod Photo/Color
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 1: Run the installer

Step 2: Follow the steps the installer says

Step 3: Once the installer is finished reboot the iPod and hold rewind to boot into Linux.

Click the image to open in full size.

Part 1: Installing Linux
Step 1) Download Miche's Easy Installer
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/22489765/nanoipl.zip
Step 2) Plug In Your Ipod So It Goes Into Disk Mode, Run The Program And Click Next.
Step 3) It Should Now Take You To A Similar Screen That Says Now Installing.
Step 4) Next It Will Say Installation Complete.
Step 5) Now Linux Is Successfully Installed On Your Ipod Nano 1st Generation.

Part 2:
Puting Working Movies On Your Ipod Nano.
A Quick Note About The Movies. An Ipod Nano CAN NOT Read Regullar .avi Or Any Other Type Of Movie File It First Needs To Be Converted To Frames! A Movie Converter Is Provided By Joey C. So Credits To Him. ^_^

Step 1) Download MoPiD 1.5 Series Ipod Movie Converter.
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/22490121/mopid.zip
Step 2) Open It And Select "MoPiD.exe"
Step 3) Click Okay In Top Left Corner.
Step 4) Click Continue.
Step 5) Click Okay And Select The Movie That You Want To Convert.
Step 6) Click Okay And Select An Output Location For Your Movie. REMEMBER TO ADD .avi AT THE END OF YOUR NEW FILE NAME OR IT WILL NOT WORK
Step 7) Chose Nano At The Bottom Of The List.
Step 8) Chose the Frames Per Second (FPS) Of The Movie 15 Is Good 10 Should Be Your Minimum.
Step 9) Click Okay And Yes Then Your File Will Start To Convert. It Will Say Skipping Frame Rapidly In The Dos Window That Is Okay Because Your Movie Was Probably 30 FPS. This Is Just Making It Less FPS.
Step 10) YOUR MOVIE IS NOW CONVERTED. Now You Need To Copy Your New Movie File To Your Ipod. Open Up My Computer And Open The G:\ Drive Open The Notes Folder And Make A New Folder Inside It Called Movies. Then Copy Your Movie Inside That File.

If you want to install the game Doom read this tutorial
Code:
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod-modding/46344-put-doom-ipod.html
General Information on the nano
To Boot Into Linux Hold Down Rewind When Starting The Ipod. To Exit Linux In The Root Menu Select Power And Chose Quit Linux. To Play Movies You Need To Use File Browser In Linux Select the Notes Folder Then Select The Movies File That You Created And Watch Your Movie.

3.1 iTouch
Click the image to open in full size.

For The installer to work You Must have firmware version 1.1.1 you can check in itunes.

Step 1) Check your firmware in itunes. if 1.1.1 skip to the bottom tutorial.
Step 2) if firmware is version 1.1.2 use this tutorial
Code:
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod/81305-downgrade-your-ipod-firmware.html
Step 3) if firmware is version 1.1.3 use this tutorial
Code:
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod-modding/82899-downgrade-1-1-3-1-1-1-a.html
This is a Windows Tutorial Not Mac.

Here are Step by Step instructions on how to Hack Via Jailbreaking The iTouch to Allow Third Party Programs. ex. Nes.

1. Do a system restore just to be sure everything is clean and non corrupt on your iTouch.
2. Open Safari on the iTouch
3. Browse to this Exact URL
Code:
http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com
4. Wait a few seconds and Safari should crash. (This is good)
5. On your windows pc download this file.

Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/62141406/touchFree.zip
6. Extract it to one folder so its not a jumble mess on your desktop.
7. Connect your iTouch to your pc. Make sure iTunes is closed. also go to task manager and make sure ituneshelper.exe gets closed too
8. Run the touchfree executable.
9. It will do everything automated for you. When it says to reboot. Hold the sleep button and the Home key. (if it says reboot twice. then do it twice)
10. When it asks for IP. you must have the iTouch connected to the same network as you wirelessly. On iTouch go to settings>Wi-Fi>Click the blue arrow beside your network and type that ip adress into touchfree
11. Locate the Putty Executable. and open it.
12. Type in your iTouch's IP and hit okay.
Code:
Username: root
Password: alpine
13. Enter the user name and pass (pretty easy not hard to miss)
14. Type /Applications/Installer.app/Installer and hit enter to launch Installer.
15. After AppTapp opens on your iTouch, press control+c to close it
16. Open Safari on iTouch and navigate to "http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/beta"
17. Tap yes to add it to Installer
18. Back in terminal, using putty, type /Applications/Installer.app/Installer and hit enter to launch Installer again.
19. Install Trip1PogoStick located under System category to enable scrolling and applications.
20. When you're done, reboot the iTouch and close all your windows. You now have AppTapp installed on your iTouch =]

I know WHAT you're doing to your iPod, 100%

I'm asking, what does this Linux firmware allow/contain/whatever that's better than the regular iPod firmware? What's the difference in using one over the other? I don't know how else to explain it.....
