This method works only on firmware 1.1.2 and above. 1) Download Audacity (Windows) or (Mac) and install it. 2) Open Audacity. Go to File -> Open and browse to the song you want to make a ringtone of, and select it. You will then get a screen looking like this: 3) Select the part of the song you wish to make your ringtone. It should not exceed 30 seconds. 4) Copy this part (Edit -> Copy). Then open a new document (File -> New). Paste the part in the new file. (Edit -> Paste). 5) Now we save the ringtone in MP3 format. (File -> Export as MP3). You might have to install the LAME MP3 encoder, for which the instructions are given here. 6) Open iTunes. Add the ringtone you’ve just created to the library. Right click on it and select “Convert selection to AAC”. 6) Now there should be two of the same file in your library. Right click the one just created by iTunes, and select Show in Windows Explorer (Windows) or Show in Finder (Mac). 7a) Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP users: Tools -> Folder Options -> View. 7a) Windows Vista users: Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View. Uncheck “Hide extensions from known file types” and press Apply. 7b) Mac users: Finder -> Preferences -> Advanced<. Check “Show all file extensions”. 8) Now the file extension will be visible to you. It has an extension .m4a. Right click the file, press Rename, and change the extension to .m4r and press Enter. If any warning message shows up, press OK/Yes to continue. 9) The ringtone’s made. Now all that’s left is to add it to iTunes. Open iTunes. Delete the previous two from your library. Go to File -> Add file to library, browse to where your ringtone is located, and add. Go to the Ringtones tab of iTunes. It should appear there now. 10) Now all you need to do is connect your phone to your computer and sync. Make sure you have ring tones checked in the sync settings. Its done. You will now be able to set it as your ringtone. Enjoy! I take ZERO credit for this tut. Thanks to the guys and gals over at sleepers.net for finding this out.
