Nyko Intercooler LED Mod

This is a discussion about Nyko Intercooler LED Mod within the Hardware Customizations section, where you will Learn to modify your Xbox 360's hardware.; 1st thing take the IC (Intercooler) and take out the 3 screws. That piece comes right off. Under that is another piece which has 2 screws and in my case the screws were VERY tight.

Cool Nyko Intercooler LED Mod

1st thing take the IC (Intercooler) and take out the 3 screws. That piece comes right off.

Under that is another piece which has 2 screws and in my case the screws were VERY tight. Be carefull not to strip the heads.

Determine which unit you want to pull power from. (I used the one the actuall PSU plugs into)

Carefully dig out all the hotglue.

This is where we are at now.

Now we need to build our string of LEDs. I decided to use 2 strings of 5 with 1 resistor per string.

So for each strand we need 1 pos wire and 1 ground wire. I cut small sections since this is my "hot" wire
and I don't want the chance of shorting it out on something.

Longer LED legs are POS, attach them to your POS wire.

For my neg wire I striped most of the shielding off since it is simply a ground and I knew I could hotglue any possible spots it could come in contact with a "hot" wire.

So now you sould have all your LEDs attacked to a POS and ground wire.

Easy huh.

Here is an image of th power sources in the IC labeled.

Photo courtesy of Morlok8k from the above hyperlink.

I used the 12 V in my application

Gently pull the wire out of the socket it will not come out all the way.

When you get it to where you can see some of the metal piece attached to the wire get some needlenose and grab the metal piece and pull the wire out.

I soldered my strands directly on the metal piece but close to the wire to not interfere with reinserting the wire into the socket.

I am not sure if it makes a difference but I used a seperate 12v source for each strand. I assume it better to spread the load than pile it on one socket possibly overheating that socket.

I then wound the 2 ground wires from my 2 strands together, removed a ground wire and soldered it on. If you do it right the wire will plug right back in its socket. My case I diddn't have the wire perfectly aligned so I had to trim a little plastic out of the socket to make it work.

Click the image to open in full size.

I then filled that unit with hot glue to hold everything in place like it was before I took it apart.

This is where we are at now.

Click the image to open in full size.

IMPORTANT: I found out the hard way. There are 2 small holes in the unit and the glue will seep through the otherside making it impossible to plug in the PSU into the IC. I just dug it out very carefully on that side. I imagine if you stick something in the holes it could prevent that.

Anyways

Postion your LEDs to get the most light but disrupt the airflow as little as possible and hotglue in place.

Click the image to open in full size.

Reassemble, it will take some work to move the wires around to get everything back together without crushing everything.

Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. smile.gif

Again I want to give credit to Morlok8k for using his photo of the power sources on the Nyko Intercooler.

PLEASE LEAVE THANKS.

the nyko ones are actually known to cause overheating. this was done before that and actually never caused any problems, but has since been removed.

Thats what I mean. My 360 got a error like a hour after I had that thing on. I just left it alone took the ****ty cooler off and played and no probs.

heh

I actually did this w/o a tutorial and 2 LED's i took out 2 of the fans in the intercooler and burned the wires a bit (now i got LED's from advanced auto that were cased with plastic, suppoes to be for underlights on a car. so i busted the plastic and theres wires that connect to the LED's) with the wires attached to the led's i twisted them on the fan wires and used elecrtic tape to cover the wires. I put the fans back in and stuck the LED's in the space between the fan and the outer plastic and finished it now looks just like the one on your tut but alot brighter

thats cool though, now you gotta mod it a little more so you can power it separately from your console so that you can cool your xbox without opening it or messing it up.
