Cool Lighting The Remotes Guide Button "The X"

Okay, so here goes the tutorial...

Tools you will need:

- small flat head screwdriver (good for prying things)
- small philips head screwdriver
- 1 LED (color is up to you. I used green)
- 1 100Ω resistor
- 1 switch (I used radio shacks small slide switch. (pictured here)
- a router
- hot glue gun

Step 1, take out the batteries and unscrew the screw.

Step 2, open the controller. Its pretty simple. I found its easiest to use a very small flat head screwdriver, and pry apart the controller from under the front IR lens. Then open the whole thing working your way towards the bottom. be careful not to pull on the battery tabs.

Step 3, take the board, and solder some wire to the top side of the battery contacts. Be careful though. The battery contacts will fall out if they are not being held together. I used an alligator clip to hold the contact to the board, that way when I melt the solder, it wont fall out.

Step 4, work the wire around to the back side of the board, and run it along the very edge of the board. This is important because the back cover of the controller has extensions that hold the board in place, and the controller wont close right if the wire is in the way. Just hot glue the wire in place as you go. Nevermind the switch in the picture, I will save that step for later.

Step 5, Ieft a little bit of slack on the end of the wire just in case, but this is where you solder the 100Ω resistor to the LED, then solder it to the wires. Solder the resistor to the positive end of the LED (the longer leg is positive), and be sure to solder the LED to the wires correctly, otherwise the LED will burn out.

Also, the LED is not mounted to anything. It will pretty much just float.

Step 6, take out the X button (easy). then notch the top of it so light can shine through.

In the trial and error stage, I was planning on have the LED inside the button, but that won't work. you will notice that I gutted the button, but it still works.

Step 7, Now its time for the switch. Carefully line up where the switch is going to go, and mark it on the controller. Be careful that the switch won't be in the way of those extensions on the controller.

Notch out a section on the top AND the bottom of the case. just go a little at a time, checking to see if the holes are big enough and line up.

Step 8, You have to cut off the IR LED holder so your LED can fit. this won't affect the performance of the remote.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 9, now put the rubber buttons back, and put the board back. Make sure the LED goes around the board and aims at the X button. This is how it will light up.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 10, now its time for the switch. put the switch in place and look for a spot to cut the wires so they can reach the switch. Cut the wires, and solder them to the switch. Then put the switch in place and glue it to the side of the remote. Make sure the board is all the way down, and all the buttons come out the remote the way they are supposed to.

The place where I put my switch, I had to cut a little off the screw tab because it overlapped the clip for the remote. Also, be careful not to be in the way of any extensions. If you are, its okay to trim 1, but don't go crazy.

Click the image to open in full size.

After that, you are pretty much done. Make sure the X button pressed normal and comes back up, and make sure the LED doesn't shine through and blind you when you press the button down. This can be fixed by adjusting the LED.
