Custom .map files

This is a discussion about Custom .map files within the Halo 3 Modding section, where you will Learn how to mod Halo 3, learn how to skin Halo 3, and learn what programs you need to modify Halo 3's content and maps.; Why isn't it possible to just link a usermap to a custom .map file that does not have anything preventing it from working like an RSA Key?

Re: Custom .map files

If they aren't resigned, Halo 3 isn't going to treat them like normal map files.

Resigning aside, good luck even getting Halo to add a custom .map to the maps list.

well duh i know that i was asking if its possible to link the usermap to use a different .map.

i'm just wondering if you can rebuild a map that the xbox doesn't need to recognize with a key. basically take the key stuff out but make it still work.

wouldn't the xbox detect the irregularity in the .map though?

Re: Custom .map files

it would still check if it were signed, and you could only use the same keypair because the xex checks it with bungie's pair so therefore none other will work.

Re: Custom .map files

ok, this all makes sense, but what if you play offline. the xex cant check it against bungies servers for the correct encryption. but im guessing there is a work around in place. does it even need to be checked? because i believe the maps are only resigned when you play online or in match making right? and offline what does it check for? i think the hypervisor would take care of this. right? thanks

Well you have to resign maps to play offline in halo 2. Offline wouldn't make a difference - it will still check

the xex of halo 3 checks everything with the public key... its stored in the executable, not on bungie's servers basically.
