The signature that is written to the map header in the maps clean state is the signature generated off of all the data contained in the map in its original state. Halo 3 generates the signature of the map at run time and compared the generated signature to the signature written to the map header. If they match the map is correctly signed, if not you will get the "Failed to load the map..." error message. The signature in the maps header never changes, unless of course you change it...
