Can you guys elaborate more on what NAND hardware is?

Basically a hardware component where your Kernel, dashboard, etc is stored.

Yeah we talked about it. Disregard what I said about the capacity of the NANDs being identical.

Re: .Map Modding Discussion

why not replace the NAND on a standard console with a larger NAND identical to the ones in Dev-Kits and just flash it with a Dev-Kit NAND dump? or is there hardware problems preventing that? oh and does anyone know which chip on the motherboard the NAND is?

Re: .Map Modding Discussion

If someone was to Remove the NAND and CPU from a dev unit and re-soldier it to a retail unit. The retail unit will act as a dev unit. It must be done in pairs because the NAND is linked to the CPU.

A dev nand and cpu, would have to be taken from a dev, which reinforces my earlier point about the parts sharing the same cost as a dev :p

Re: .Map Modding Discussion

could you not edit the NAND to accept the standard CPU

No. NANDs and CPUs are paired together.

Re: .Map Modding Discussion

If you knew the CPU key of both the CPU's then yes it would be possible.

Re: .Map Modding Discussion

wouldn't the cpu key be stored in the current NAND of that cpu?

Re: .Map Modding Discussion

No it isn't. The CPU key is required to decrypt the NAND. Thats what ties them together. So If I were to get the CPU key of a retail console, and a decrypted dev NAND, I would in theory re-encrypt the NAND using the retail CPU key. But the hardware would be stopping me from doing so. As appearently the NAND chips on retail units have less capacity then required for a dev NAND.

If you don't understand then you'll just have to wait and see. Try to learn all you can about the subject and read the posts over.

After reading through this thread and thinking this over I've concluded this:
I think I'll just stick with Halo 2 mods. Those are fun anyway. Now once, or if, Halo 3 .map modding is possible, I'll look into that. But right now I'm happy with what we've got.
It's not that I think it's pointless to look into Halo 3 .map modding, I just don't feel the urge to indulge myself into something I don't understand or care about. But good luck to everybody, rooting you on!

It's already possible to .map mod Halo 3. What are you guys talking about?

Lol, most of us including myself can't do that though.
