H2 - How to Model Using Misfit Model 3D

~.:How to Model Using Misfit Model 3D:.~
~Halo 2 Tutorial by NotZachary~
-This tutorial will teach you how to import/export/model any Halo 2 models properly, using Misfit Model 3D

~What is Modeling?~
Modeling is editing visual 3D models. Creating these works of art take skill, time, and persistence. All Halo 2 items ingame have models (as well as every other game), and can be edited (there is still controversy over how to properly edit the BSP visual mesh). I will teach you how to extract them, edit them in Misfit Model 3D, and inject them back into your map.
**NOTE: The model-injection process is a little screwed up, and isnt exactly the way Bungie does it, but it will not destroy your map. It still works.

~Tools~
Entity 1.3.9 (must register at HaloMods to view download link.)
Misfit Model 3D (this software is free, don't worry.)

~.:The Tutorial:.~
I now present to you my modeling tutorial (so simple)

1. Model Extraction
  • Open your map up in Entity and scroll down to the "[mode]" tag.

  • Expand it by hitting the "+" sign, and scroll down to a model of your choice. (I will be using "objects\weapons\rifle\plasma_rifle\plasma_rif le")

  • Head up to the top and hit the Raw Editor (blue "+" sign). Go to "Export Meshes" > "To .OBJ"

  • Now in the prompt that comes up, create a new folder (just name them the end of the model for easiness.

  • Now select the folder and hit "OK". You'll then get a box saying "Done". Hit "OK".

  • Congrats! You just extracted your model. Now for the "modeling" part of this tutorial.
2. Editing Your Model
  • Now find the location where you saved your model. There will be a couple files, including ".obj" files that end with "[#]" (the # represents numbers). Now open your model with the highest number up in Misfit Model 3D. I've always found this handy, underdog software to be extremely useful. Milkshape 3D is good, but not free. 3ds Max is by far better, but i found it difficult to use, and a massive price has been put on it. Anyway, once your model is open, mess with the tools. They are extremely easy to use, and I'll be using my unreleased Halo 3 Spiker model as an example.

  • Now once you're done, go to "File" > "Save". Then exit out. Now go to the folder where your model was. You'll find another ".mtl" file. If not, skip this next step.

  • Delete the original ".mtl" file, and rename the new one the same as the new one (mine is "plasma_rifle.mtl").
  • Now, delete all of the ".obj" files that you didnt open up in Misfit Model 3D, and copy the edited one until there are as many edited files as the original, then rename them so that they are all the same. (i.e. - "plasma_rifle[0]", "plasma_rifle[1]", "plasma_rifle[2]", "plasma_rifle[3]")
  • Congratulations, you've just edited your model. Now for injection.
3. Injecting Your Custom Model
  • Open up Entity again and go to the same [mode] tag as before. This time, hit "Inject" in the Raw Editor.

  • Select the folder where your model was, and it will freeze for a bit. Then, you will get a box saying "Done". Hit "OK".

  • Congratulations! You've just made a custom model! Now for fixing bugs.
4. Fixing Size Issues
  • If your model is ever bigger than you made it, you can resize it this way. Multiply/divide the numbers highlighted red to cut it down.

5. Shader-Editing Your Custom Model
  • If ever you decide to skin your custom model, use this tutorial: Separating Shaders on Custom Models (credits to DarkShallFall for that tutorial)

Wow!:o This is a very good tutorial. My brother uses Misfit Modeler for just personal things. I'll try that. I have 3ds max, but Misfit Modeler seems easier to use.

3ds max is god-like modeling software, but its expensive, and i found all the tools in wierd areas. but if you get it to work, you can make incredible models ...

hey i use maya 8.5 (it was tottally worth all the fing money) snd would it be the same to save it? like do everything u dide here but instead of using milk thing or misfit use maya?
and another q. if u scale ur model bigger will it be bigger in the game?.
(that means if u make it bigger in the EDITOR)

Yes if you change the scale it will change in game and if maya can save in obj then yes it will work the same.

how do u reduce them and if u assign a blue shader to the br in maya or any editor. will it be blue wen u load it?

ok well it did it again but with a 3. so im takign a wild guess and am saying that u cant have more vertices than the origanol? if so well. this is goign to be one funny looking lazer rifle

ok i tried injecting it, i have entity v1.6 (is that a problem?) and i try injecting it and it wants me to change the name of the (meta?) and i hit ok but then it says "error: MPshared file path not found please check file paths" so i went to my file path settings and all of them are set to proper locations and MPshared isn't even an option to set, help please?

EDIT: ok well i got it to work past the errors where i can see it in model viewer, but it's as a new one, not the old one??
