Hold the probe in different positions. Angle it a different way. Just make sure you don't move it at all when you are actually extracting the firmware.

are you sure this is a lite-on with the 7xxxxx firmware?

Well i know you said that. But which side are you using? The USB side or the Serial?

Ok, well then. I would say to try and make it again. If it doesn't work again. Then i would say pay $30 for a USB Xtractor

Your probe will be fine, it isnt about making it 100% the same. It is a general piece of equipment and its kind of hard to mess up.

Just make sure JF recognizes your drive.

He is getting bad serial data. Meaning probe is not doing its job right. He never mentioned drive not showing up/not being recognized.

The best way to make a probe is to use the max3232 chip I have a schematic. For the chip, you can just sign up at texas instruments' website ti.com and order free samples. Even the shipping is free. Below is the schematic.
