how to unlock motorola v323i cell phones

MY son and i both have motorola V323 I. Mine is about 6-8 months old. HIs is 2 weeks old. I got motorola tools and i can put ringtones on mine just fine but it wont let us do anything with his.
It wont read his device or something. Can his be locked?

What carrier do you have? Because if it is Verizon, some of their newer phones won't let you transfer data unless you buy Verizon's transfer kit.

you can open your cellphone up and at the bottom it will say a number for examble my is v180
