Well...

It doesn't "completely stop your internet by disconnecting the ethernet cable", it stops you receiving packets from the internet by breaking the receiving cable.

You can still send packets.

And it doesn't really matter where you put it... as long as it's not attached directly to the XBOX, because the XBOX can detect voltage differences between the cables in the patch lead. You could attach it to the exchange box half way down your street
