BOO HA! NUB CAKES!
Note to moderators:
I've had this idea, to basically put a topic saying, HERES HOW TO, the nub cakes will click, and then they'll see this, if I were you, I might stickysticky x3 This is to help clean up all the "how can I mod H3" "You can't".... "dude, I need help, I need to know what to do to have mods on H3" "DAMN NUBS USE THE SEARCH BUTTON" lawl, to clean up that stuff xD
You CANNOT MOD HALO 3 as of yet... mostly due to the fact that everyone doesn't want Halo 3 to be like Halo 2 before their last update, which, if you don't know, it was like, every 5 games you'd get cheated...
But yeah, you can't mod yet, that is... without the proper equipment, which is a dev kit or dev kit hybrid 360...
What is that you say?
Well, in lame terms, a development kit, basically the big companies that make games for the 360 have special 360's that bypass signatures, codes, etc. so they can make their game, then MS patches everything afterwards basically.
You cannot get your hands on them easily, either you have to go through a process with MS, proving that you want to be a game developer, so they can give you a dev kit, or you can have a special "hook up."
If by some chance you do get your hands on a dev kit, not only do you need Johnson, but you need programs only given out from trusted others and other pieces you need. You can do this only because the dev kit bypasses the private key, which stated above.
Now remember, dev kits can only be offline, THANK GOD right? No online modding... though there I have heard someone mention something about one hybrid being able to go online, but I dunno, don't quote me.
Uhm... one last thing, you've seen and downloaded mods around, you know why? People say they were leaked, others say Anthony and others gave them out to see how the public reacts... frankly I don't care... But they were made by Anthony, currently the head hauncho, the big man who cracked the more harder parts of H3's code, but ya... he was the one to release the mods, and if I am correct, the only one, if you have seen other mods, like pics and stuff, then they're just media of their dev kit.
AND NO, you cannot simply make a program to sign it, do you think Bungie is that ignorant? They put A LOT of thinking and coding in Halo 3 maps to prevent such stuff, I don't know the specs but there ya go.
So ya, that about wraps it up, now, I'm not big in teh Halo 3 modding community section yet, so if I misread, misinterpreted, or just put faulty information, or even if you would like to add on, please feel free to get involved in teh topic.

most people talk about how you need a devkit... but there is A LOT more to it even after you get that, such as the private programs and such

...and you can get a demo kit which is a retail with XDK software on it. Just because you have a Dev/Demo kit doesn't mean you can mod Halo 3 either you have to edit the xex (or w/e) to read the maps without checking for the signatures. If you get a demo kit you can edit in real time... ...To my understanding a Demo kit can get on live but a Dev kit cant. Demo kits are upgraded retails with XDK software... ...I believe Shad0w LAG also said that Demo kits are way cheaper and way more common to find.

...Dev-kits cannot go onto xbox live, instead they come equipped with special software that emulates an xbox live environment without actually connecting to xbox live... ...Basically, even with a dev-kit, you're still screwed. Unless you do something to contribute, you won't be able to mod halo 3 since RTH (real-time halo) and the modded xex are kinda private, and nobody's just going to give it to you unless they trust you.

Hybrids official names are "demo kits". We learned however that such machines can actually access both xbox live and partnernet alike. We discovered this by mistake when running the stock360 dashboard. This is why such methods are dangerous to the public.
confliction to some extent, adding both
