in a way thats what it does
i dont no 100% the exact reason why it works but some how the battery tells the psp to look at the memory stick instead of the motherboard (and other componets for launch)

it will launch the eboot that is on the memory stick witch is a 1.50 it will load the 1.50 update then install it on to your psp frimware
