Explanation of Error Codes

Call Customer Service Error with no number but occurs only when trying to load a game or access menu items from dashboard (never on boot up) Call 1800-4MY-Xbox, they will give you a code to enter via a controller to reset the system More Info

Tutorial written by: Superfro (posted with permission)

Description:
When you attempt to boot, a 'you need service' message comes up, and has a LED style number on the top left hand corner. Here is what they mean.
Disclaimer:
This information is a believed to be correct, should be as close as it gets;
Also:
Bootloader stuff you should never see, since if it fails kernel doesn't boot. (thus you see no message)
Code Who sets it - Description
0 - any - No error (duh)
1 - bootldr - Unknown exactly, something to do with checking the motherboard
2 - bootldr - Eeprom check failed
3 - bootldr - ??/not used
4 - bootldr - Ram check failed
5 - kernel - HDD not locked (retail bioses require the hd to be locked)
6 - kernel - Cannot unlock HDD
7 - kernel - HDD timeout
8 - kernel - No HDD found
9 - kernel - HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)
10 - kernel - DVD timeout
11 - kernel - No DVD Found
12 - kernel - DVD parameters (PIO/DMA)
13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.
14 - dashboard - Error loading dashboard (dashboard generic error)
15 - - ??/not used
16 - dashboard - Other files to do with dashboard / dashboard settings (specific dashboard error)
17 - - ??/not used
18 - - ??/not used
19 - - ??/not used
20 - kernel - The dashboard was attempted to load and failed; It was a cold boot, and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed, but it (for some reason) needed to be noted that the dvd passed the challenge/response authentication
21 - anywhere - This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag
In closing:
21 was the highest number I could find, I don't think any thing is past that. And for the unknown ones, I couldn't find any reference to them at all, I don't believe they are used.
Greets to everyone (who is contributing) in the homebrew scene.

Not exactly. Your xbox is locked with a code that is specific to that xbox. This is why we hotswap. There is no "file" persay. You would need to take the HDD you want to swap, unlock it, and then re-lock it with the key for the new xbox.

okay i have worked my error 13 out by the tut azzid recommended, but i still have a problem of error 21 at boot up now. it says
This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag

This occurs frequently when the xbox is unable to boot due to dashboard changes being made (ie Gcue true blue hasnt been resigned, parts of the stock dash are missing - incomplete FTP backups copied to a new HDD for example).
I don't think he would recommend a dash that had parts missing. I mean, it got rid of my prob 13. He knows what he is talking about. anyone else figure out how to get rid of error 21? I have already rebboted the ms dash back onto my c drive to get me here. that was suppose to set me back to retail hdd. Just trying to get it figured so I can start back over or go further. Yes i can play normal non burnt games. I can ftp, I had to, to put the newms dash on my c drive.

pan5y I know you are smart, you have any ideas?

dont want to put in a chip or hot swap. dont think i have to. lol It's not that screwed up yet

I'm guessing that is the only thing i can do. I have rebooted the ms dash back onto my c drive after deleting that and got rid of my code 13. Now it's 21. And that is suppose to mean that something is missing in the ms dash so I guess I have to go back to retail and start over. Granted it's a pain in the butt to do it all over again, but if if will fix my problems, then I can make everything work right the first time, well, second time lol

RESTORE YOUR MS DASH TO ITS RETAIL STATE

If you have attempted to install a softmod on your Xbox which failed and gave you an error, and the Microsoft Dashboard will no longer load, then this is the guide for you.

You have two options : If you still have the Hacked Softmod files still on your Xbox then the simplest way would be to do the following :

Step One : Load up the softmod installer using the correct game for your softmod files :

Splinter Cell: Go to Start Game, click LINUX, and you wont see any check points, but still press A for the Check Points. Then the installer should load up. Pics of the process:

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Mechassault: Go to Campaign, click Run Linux and that should load the installer. Mechassualt is known to be harder to get the installer loading since it requires a certain edition. Please be sure that when you have 'Run Linux' highlighted, the files description is as follows:
Controls: Normal
Difficulty: Regular
Current Level: Going Down Hard
If that does not show up, then you will have to get a different version or get Splinter Cell or 007.
Pics of the process:

Click the image to open in full size.

007: Go to Load Mission, then select the Xbox Hard Disk option and that should load the installer. Pics of the process:
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 2 - Download the latest version of the Microsoft dashboard : http://freakyhosting.be/ms-c-hosted-by-pirrup.rar (If the link is down, then let me know!)

Use WinRAR to extract it.

Step Three - Download an FTP client : FlashFXP : http://www.download.com/FlashFXP/300...=dl&tag=button

Step Four FTP to your Xbox by launching the softmod installer via Splinter Cell (this opens up a temporary FTP link between you and your Xbox)

On FlashFXP, click I agree to the trial box, and then press F8 (quick connect)

Server or URL : This is your Xbox's IP address which can be found on the bottom left hand corner of the softmod installer.

Click the image to open in full size.

Username : XBOX
Password : xbox
(These are the default login credentials)

Click the image to open in full size.

The rest can be left alone. If you all the details are correct, click connect and you should be greeted with several drive letters on the right hand side.

Double click on C
Now, on the left hand side, navigate to where the microsoft dashboard is (the one you just extracted with WinRAR)
And they should look similar to those on the right hand side.

Click the image to open in full size.

Now highlight all the files on the left hand side, and drag them to the right (if prompted to overwrite files, choose "Yes".)

Click the image to open in full size.

Once the transfer has completed, turn off your Xbox and turn it back on. If all has gone well, your Xbox should be restored to it's retail state (don't worry, saved games, music etc. is still there)

The second method

Ok, so you cannot FTP to your Xbox and you still need it fixed? Ok. Well, the second method would be to make a Data DVD with software like Nero. Simply make a Data DVD of the microsoft files, and put it in your Xbox, and use an file explorer program for your Xbox and move all the files from D(disc drive) to C(msdashboard).

If you would like to re-softmod your Xbox, follow this guide : How to Softmod with SID 4.0! Tells how to get on XBL too!

But you can miss out the first seven steps as this simply covers the process of actually placing the softmod saves onto your Xbox, which I am assuming are already on your Xbox.

lol that is the tut I just used to get the code 13 off. It didn't bring it back to retail. The http://freakyhosting.be/ms-c-hosted-by-pirrup.rar link I used as well, It did work, but to get the 21 code it contradicts it. I think I had my ms screwed from the beginning. The person that modded it for me originally never gave me a back up ms disk or anything so I don't think they soft modded everything correct or forgot to save some files.
