Hey here is a list of dvd drives and best type of media that works. Hope that it helps.

When burning for the Xbox, we best recommend Ritek DVD-R for all Xbox DVD-ROM drives.

Samsung Drive:
Reads all CD-R/RW
Reads all DVD-R/RW
Will not read DVD+R/RW

Thomson Drive:
Will not read CD-R
Will only read SOME (generally expensive media) CD-RW
Reads all DVD-R/RW
Reads all DVD+R/RW

Philips Drive:
Will not read CD-R
Will read SOME (generally expensive media) CD-RW
Reads all DVD-R/RW
Does not read DVD+R/RW

My current Xbox is a virgin, so I'm not sure what drive it has...

It's a v1.4, does anyone know what would be most common in it?, I'm going to take it appart soon, but I'm just wondering...

I went to Target today and I got some really nice HP 12x CD-RW (I only thought it went to 4x, lol), I bet they will work, but I haven't tried...

Aren't most V1.0 drives Thomson? I'm going to be recovering one of my friends Xbox's and it calls for CD-RW or DVD-R to put Slayers\XBHDM on and I don't know if my CD-RW's will work on his drive if it's Thomson because I hear they're picky...

I have a new (well, relatively so) Phillups drive...and there are some DVD-R's it won't read, whereas my Sansung does read them. The DVD types the Phillups reads so far is just the Sony brand DVD-Rs. The Samsung reads Sony, Maxell, and Fuji Film. Just a small update to the types of discs the various ones read so far. I am gonna be getting some Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle) in the near future, and I will update this when I get the chance.
