Developer Cyan, Inc. is looking to get back into the scene with their upcoming title Obduction, which was confirmed to be a spiritual successor to both Myst and Riven. Obduction will follow a similar play style as an immersive, exploration-based puzzle adventure game. Obduction has received its funding from Kickstarter, amassing over an impressive $1,300,000 (roughly £880,000) since the campaign launched.
Obduction will start with the player's character getting abducted, in a sense. A strange artifact falls from the sky and without any explanation, it sends the player off into a completely different world. From there, the player is left to their own devices to make sense of this alien world, and the developers intend for the world and the story to be the player's own world and story. Exploring these new landscapes, the player might ask themselves why a farmhouse is located in the midst of such an odd place, which is the developers' intention behind how the game will be paced and experienced: by the bounds of the player's curiosity and intuition.
As a celebration for the New Year, Cyan released a 30 second trailer for Obduction, which gives viewers a sense of what they last experienced in Myst or, if Myst was never played, a new sensation altogether which entices viewers to want to explore the game while making them dread the vastness and solitude that it sometimes holds.
There is no set release date for Obduction, but it can be expected to come out sometime soon as it was predicted by the developers that it would be released in late 2015. As Obduction continues to surpass its original funding goal, it may yet be possible that Obduction sees its release for Windows and Mac sometime in the coming months.
