It's over 10 years since the Battlefield franchise first hit our shelves. Back then, not many people had heard of DICE. Fast forward to the present day and they're one of the big names in the industry. Arguably, it's thanks to this game - Battlefield 1942 - that they're now as well-known as they are.

In light of this anniversary (albeit a little late) and Battlefield Premium's two millionth subscriber DICE and EA have released Battlefield 1942 on Origin for free to give us a taste of where it all began. I'll include a link below for all of you Origin users who'd like to nab yourselves a free copy of the game.

Battlefield 1942 was arguably a turning point in FPS gaming. It was one of the first to blend infantry and vehicular combat fairly seamlessly. It also saw the success of "rock-paper-scissors" gameplay in a first person shooter. This success racked the game a number of awards including "Game of the Decade" in the Swedish Video Game Awards and managed to sell over 4 million copies.
